How to Soundproof Your Mechanical Keyboard: Foam, Tape, and O-Rings
You love your mechanical keyboard — the feel, the feedback, the satisfying actuations. Your coworkers on a Zoom call, or the person in the next room, do not share your enthusiasm. The good news: you don't have to switch to a mushy membrane. A few simple mods can take your clicky clacker from "office disturbance" to "barely audible."
This guide covers every sound dampening method worth trying, from the cheapest (tape mod, $0) to the most involved (foam mods + switch lube). Each method is explained with what it costs, what tools you need, and what kind of result to expect.
Why Mechanical Keyboards Are Loud
The noise from a mechanical keyboard comes from several sources stacked on top of each other:
- Switch bottom-out: The stem hitting the bottom housing at the end of each keystroke.
- PCB resonance: The board itself acting like a drum — especially in hollow plastic cases.
- Case ping: Metal or polycarbonate cases have a springy ring that amplifies the sound.
- Keycap clack: The keycap making contact with the switch housing on the upstroke.
- Stabilizer rattle: On larger keys (spacebar, shift, enter), poorly lubed stabilizers add a scratchy rattle on top of everything else.
Different mods target different sources. The most effective setups combine two or three approaches.
Method 1: O-Ring Dampeners (Easiest, No Disassembly)
Noise reduction: Moderate | Cost: ~$5–8 | Time: 30–60 min | Reversible: Yes
O-rings are small silicone rings you place around each switch stem, under the keycap. When you bottom out, the O-ring cushions the impact before the keycap fully seats.
How to install O-rings:
- Pull all your keycaps off using a keycap puller (or gently pry from the edges).
- Stretch one O-ring over the cross-shaped stem of each switch.
- Push the O-ring down until it sits snugly at the base of the stem.
- Reinstall keycaps and test.
O-rings work well on linear and clicky switches. On tactile switches, they can mask the tactile bump slightly. Use 40A hardness rings for minimal feel impact; 70A rings are thicker and quieter but feel noticeably mushier.

O-rings reduce travel distance by 0.2–0.4mm. If you're a touch typist who relies on feeling bottom-out for accuracy, try a few keys first before committing to the whole board.
Method 2: Case Foam Mod
Noise reduction: Significant | Cost: ~$5–12 | Time: 45–90 min | Reversible: Yes
Case foam fills the hollow space inside your keyboard case between the plate/PCB assembly and the bottom shell. This empty air pocket acts as a resonance chamber — filling it kills that "hollow thock" sound that plagues budget keyboards.
What you need:
- Craft foam sheet, neoprene, or EVA foam (2–4mm thickness)
- Scissors or a craft knife
- A screwdriver to open the case
Steps:
- Unscrew the bottom plate and open the case.
- Trace the inside bottom of the case onto your foam sheet.
- Cut the foam to fit — leave room for any USB port cutouts and screw posts.
- Lay the foam inside the bottom shell and reassemble.
This mod is especially effective on hollow plastic cases. Metal cases get less benefit here because the walls don't resonate the same way.
Method 3: PE Foam Mod (Biggest Bang for Your Buck)
Noise reduction: Major | Cost: ~$3–8 | Time: 30–45 min | Reversible: Yes
The PE foam mod is the current darling of the keyboard modding community — and for good reason. A thin sheet of polyethylene foam placed between the PCB and the plate transforms the sound profile dramatically, giving a deeper, more muted "thock" without changing the switch feel at all.
Steps:
- Remove keycaps and (for hot-swap boards) pull out the switches.
- Unscrew and lift the plate + PCB assembly from the case.
- Cut a sheet of PE foam to match the PCB footprint.
- Punch out holes for each switch pin using the PCB as a template, or press the PCB down on the foam — the switch pins will punch through naturally.
- Slide the foam between the PCB and the plate.
- Reinstall the switches, keycaps, and case.
Pro Tip
This mod is easier on hot-swap keyboards — you don't need to desolder anything. If you have a soldered board, the PE foam still works, but you'll need to remove the plate without desoldering (some boards allow this with enough flex).
Method 4: Tape Mod (Free, No Disassembly Required)
Noise reduction: Moderate | Cost: $0 | Time: 15–30 min | Reversible: Yes
The tape mod is exactly what it sounds like: you apply a few strips of masking tape or painter's tape to the back side of the PCB. The tape adds mass and deadens the PCB's resonant ring.
To apply: remove the keycaps and switches (or unscrew the board to access the PCB back), then lay strips of tape across the solder side of the PCB. Avoid covering the USB connector pad and any bare metal contacts.
The improvement is modest on its own — think of it as a free warm-up that stacks well with the PE foam or case foam mods. If you're not ready to commit to foam, start here.
Method 5: Lube Your Switches and Stabilizers
Noise reduction: Significant for scratchy switches and rattly stabs | Cost: $15–30 | Time: 1–3 hours | Reversible: Yes (but tedious)
Lubing doesn't reduce bottom-out noise the same way foam does, but it eliminates the scratchiness on linear switches and the rattling on stabilizers. Both of those are separate contributors to overall loudness — especially on budget keyboards where stock stabilizers can be absolutely terrible.
- Linear switches: Use Krytox 205g0 or Tribosys 3204. Apply a thin layer to the legs, rails, and stem sides — not the top of the stem (that deadens tactile feel).
- Tactile switches: Use a thinner lube like Tribosys 3203. Skip the legs to preserve the tactile bump.
- Stabilizers: Use dielectric grease or Krytox 205g0 on the wire-to-housing contacts. This eliminates most spacebar and shift key rattle entirely.

Test Every Key After Modding
After any mod that involves opening the board or reinstalling switches, run a full key test before closing everything up. It's easy to accidentally skip a switch reinsertion on a hot-swap board, or shift a switch slightly off-center when reinstalling the plate.
